There is a time and a place for girl math, but for our editors, the holiday season is about math math — the kind that actually adds up. We've got gifts to buy, travel to book, and holiday outfits to coordinate — saving money where we can doesn't just make sense, it's also the smart thing to do. Take the latter: why indulge in a single wear-once dress for that upcoming soirée when the more pragmatic approach is to buy several versatile pieces that we can mix and match all winter long?
This season, we're turning to Macy's for affordable pieces that can take us through the holiday season. Macy's isn't just home to affordable gifts for everyone on your list; it's also the destination our editors rely on for everything from party dresses that work for a variety of gatherings to versatile shoes that can go from office to holiday happy hour. Ahead, see the pieces we're wearing on repeat.

For a Holiday Dinner
"When the holidays roll around, my friends and I like to indulge in a big night out at a swanky restaurant with martinis and steak to share. Lately, we've been dining at old-school NYC institutions, the ones with white tablecloths where servers crumb coat the table in between courses. I dress for the occasion, mixing movement and texture: a sleek leather jacket, a flowy cotton midi skirt, and lace tights for a subtle touch of visual intrigue. Even though the setting calls for heels, I reach for comfortable shoes — with this outfit, chunky loafers adorned with a big buckle. After paying the bill, we step back out onto the street. I wrap myself up with a red wool scarf to brace myself for the walk down the wind-chilled avenue." — Rayna Rossitto, editor, branded content

For an Office Party
"A black blazer in any format (jacket, top, dress) is a staple in my wardrobe, so dressing one up for a holiday party is a no-brainer for me. It's simple and sophisticated, and doesn't require much to elevate. This blazer dress in particular already does the heavy lifting with its sharp shoulders, structured sleeves, and nipped-in waist. All I need are some sparkly statement earrings, sheer tights, and a fun evening bag. The best part is I can repurpose the dress with different accessories long after the holidays are over." — Stephanie Nguyen, associate director, branded content
For a Family Gathering
"My extended family usually gets together on Christmas Eve, and it's one of the few occasions where we actually dress up beyond jeans and sweaters. This is my first holiday season as a mom, so I knew this year's outfit had to be polished, but still comfortable enough to pick up my ten-month-old son. This mesh plaid dress fits the bill: the long sleeves and midi length feel appropriate for winter, while the pattern adds a festive vibe. Paired with equestrian-style leather boots, a chocolate brown suede shoulder bag, and wavy gold earrings, the whole look is stylish, fun, and practical — the trifecta for a new mom." — Annalise Mantz, associate director, branded content

For a Day of Holiday Shopping
"Living in New York City, I always like the idea of doing most of my holiday gift shopping in person — choosing a shopping neighborhood (like Soho, Nolita, or Fifth Avenue) and hitting as many stores as I can in one day, trying to check everyone off my list. But walking around the city with increasingly heavy purchases is no joke, which is why my outfits for these gift-shopping endeavors are built with comfort and warmth in mind first. I love to grab an oversized wool coat that hits below the knees, making me feel like I'm wrapped up and cozy. I'll pair that with a cute tote that's roomy enough to carry everything I need for the day and comfy loafers that won't bother my feet even after three hours of walking around. Underneath the coat, I'll throw on a cute red velvet dress and warm tights, so I'm all ready to transition straight from the shops to a friend's holiday party that night. Sounds like a perfect December day to me!" — Helen Murphy, senior editor, branded content
