All the Ways Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Are Still Doing Good in the World

The Duchess of Sussex's first post-royal project was narrating Disneynature's Elephant documentary. The film — which debuted on Disney+ on April 3 — follows an elephant family's 1,000-mile journey across Africa, and Meghan lent her voice in exchange for a donation to the Elephants Without Borders conservation charity. The Botswana-based foundation is dedicated to preserving the biodiversity and landscape of elephant populations in African countries.

In an interview with Good Morning America, the duchess discussed how grateful she is to bring awareness to the cause. "I've been really lucky to be able to have hands-on experience with elephants in their natural habitat," she said. "When you spend time connecting to them in their wildlife, you understand that we have a role to play in their preservation and their safety."

Harry recently checked in on caregivers for sick kids through his WellChild organization in the UK. In April, he hosted a video chat at home during the coronavirus outbreak. "It's certainly strange times. Everyone is experiencing the same thing in a unique way," Harry said. "You've got to celebrate those moments where you are just on the floor rolling around in hysterics . . . Inevitably, half an hour later, maybe a day later, there's going to be something that you have to deal with, and there's no way you can run away from it . . . Of course, there's that fear of what might happen, but there's so much that's out of our control."

Meghan also connected with the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen. In a Zoom call, the group talked about their latest project and looked back on the success of their Together: Our Community Cookbook. The duchess then connected them with The Felix Project and Street Games to help them gather ingredients and deliver free meals to those in need in London. "The spirit of the Hubb Community Kitchen has always been one of caring, giving back, and helping those in need, initially in Grenfell and now throughout the UK," Meghan said. "A home-cooked meal from one neighbor to another, when they need it most, is what community is all about."

Even though Meghan is currently living in LA, she's continuing her work with Smart Works. In March, Meghan surprised one of the organization's clients with a video call before the young woman's job interview. "You seem incredibly confident and prepared. I know everyone here is so excited," Meghan said in the video. "When I was reading about what your interests are, and especially you have a big focus in mental health as well, right? Psychology? I think that's excellent . . . There's so much going on in the world right now, and to be such a beacon of hope and focusing on getting through it, and all the positivity that we just want to send your way, and to make sure you can get on the other side of this too, and have such a great opportunity there." Meghan became a patron of Smart Works in 2019.

On what would have been the first day of the 2020 Invictus Games, Harry shared a personal video message for the wounded veterans and service men and women who would have been competing. "Life has changed dramatically for all of us since I was last in The Hague, but the IG2020 team has done an incredible job to adapt so quickly to the situation, and are busy planning dates for next year," he said. "The new dates will be shared with you very soon. I hope all of those in the Invictus family are coping well and supporting each other through these challenging times."

In May, the prince filmed a special video message for the UK's OnSide Youth Zones. The organization provides social centers for young people living in underprivileged areas, and Harry had the pleasure of attending the OnSide Awards in November 2019.

"I remember meeting so many incredible people and hearing your stories, stories of strength, of determination, of resilience, but ultimately of courage. And as I said to all of you that night and I'll repeat it again — hats off to every single one of you for surviving but also for thriving," Harry said in his message. "I can only imagine the last six weeks has made it even more challenging. This too shall pass, and before you know it, you will be back together again. Probably in a Youth Zone, you know, running around having the best time ever."

After this year's Invictus Games were postponed to 2021, Harry shared an uplifting message with the athletes during a virtual conversation he participated in on May 13 with international speakers, panelists, and participants from across the 20 nations involved with the Games.

"This conversation is all about sharing the Invictus spirit, and it is even more relevant now, as we are having to address new challenges and adapt our lives," Harry began. "I hope that all the nations, competitors, and family and friends are coping well and supporting each other through this time and I know you'll be showing that resilience, which is so central to the Invictus community . . . The Duke of Sussex made a surprise appearance at the virtual Diana Awards on July 1 to honor recipients for their work on issues related to race and injustice. He delivered a powerful speech about institutional racism, but what made this year's event extra special, though, was that it fell on what would have been his mom's 59th birthday.

"I know that my mother has been an inspiration to many of you, and I can assure you she would have been fighting in your corner. Like many of you, she never took the easy route or the popular one or the comfortable one, but she stood for something, and she stood up for people who needed it," he said. "Right now, we're seeing situations around the world where division, isolation, and anger are dominating as pain and trauma come to the surface. But I see the greatest hope in people like you, and I'm confident about the world's future and its ability to heal because it is in your hands."

In July, Harry and Meghan talked with young leaders of the Queen's Commonwealth Trust about fairness, justice, and equal rights. "We can't deny or ignore the fact that all of us have been educated to see the world differently," Harry said. "However, once you start to realize that there is that bias there, then you need to acknowledge it, you need to do the work to become more aware . . . so that you can help stand up for something that is so wrong and should not be acceptable in our society today."

"It's not just in the big moments, it's in the quiet moments where racism and unconscious bias lies and thrives," Megan added. "It makes it confusing for a lot of people to understand the role that they play in that, both passively and actively."
